Dr. Demetrio de Armas (Spain) is Deputy Director at the Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO) since 2010. Formerly (2006-2010) he has been Head of the International Unit and Director of the Centro Oceanográfico de Canarias at IEO. He graduated with a BSc, MSc in Analytical Chemistry and PhD in Environmental Chemistry from the University of La Laguna (Tenerife – Canary Is.). Since taking up his post at the IEO he has been involved in studies on marine ecosystem functioning and environmental protection. He has published in a number of international journals on different topics related with marine environment. He is the Spanish Delegate to the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO and Member of their Executive Council. National representative in various European and international marine research organizations and groups as Marine Board of the European Science Foundation (MB-ESF), EurOcean, Marine Strategy Framework Directive Expert Group (EU-MSFD), EU Marine Spatial Planning Expert Group (EU-MSP), etc.
